MISC Bhd, in collaboration with Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), recently organised a luncheon to collect funds for their "Mata Hati" project, which helps blind students.
PUTRAJAYA: The project is into its second year and aims to collect enough funds to refurbish Sekolah Menengah Pendidikan Khas (Cacat Penglihatan) Setapak, making it a place where the students can gain the same kind of advantage as able-bodied students.
MISC Bhd vice-president Nordin Mat Yusoff said they are looking into building music and art laboratories to help the blind students equip themselves with living skills.
"These students are very talented and we want to give them the same chance as others," he said.
He added that the project welcomes more contributions as it is a five-year project.
A total of RM100,000 was raised through the luncheon and more has been pledged by corporate bodies and multi-level marketing companies.
Nordin said MISC was looking into making long-term contributions through their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes.
"Everyone does CSR but we want to make sure that ours is mid to long-term. We do not have all the expertise so we collaborate with others. That is where organisations such as UPSI comes in," he said.
The charity luncheon saw the students from school impressing the guests with their musical talents, Japanese calligraphy and their skills in organising the event despite their disability.
Sculptures created by the students were auctioned during the event, which was officiated by Raja Puan Besar Perak Tuanku Zara Salim.
